Mathematics, Music & Sound

In relation with the (excellent) MOOC A Mathematical Exploration of Music and Sound this page is intended to share some tools I've developed in connection with the subject.

week2: Scales and Modes

To illustrate the musical flavour of the seven modes associated the seven scales presented in lecture 4, I've chosen two very simple tunes ( Au clair de la lune and a rudimentary jig devised to use the whole scale, but you can easily try another one ) to be listened to in different modes.
You can download the following file demoMode.abc using the abc notation ( see abc.html for more detail on how to use it - listening and writing) You will hear the tune played in all seven modes

Many discusions exist about the specific mood related to each of these modes. Here's an opportunity to build your own opinion.

week3: Fourier series and timbres

The first mode of my SoundSynth program allows you to test different harmonic content.
In addition to the original sinus, sound, tbr2, tbr0 .tbr files I've added a new lecture5.tbr file corresponding to the wave form discussed in lecture 5 pt 2 ( I leave as an exercise for you to create the tbr files corresponding to the first harmonics of the sawtooth, rectangle and triangle waveforms)

to be continued ...

I'll try to complement this page in the following weeks following the development of the course
The discussion may be continued on the MOOC discussion forum. You can also mail me

And a great thanks to Lauren and Ben Riva for this excellent course
